2005 European Day of Parks

Association of Austrian Nature Parks

 

The Association of Austrian Nature Parks/Verband der Naturparke Österreichs (VNÖ) is the umbrella organisation of the Austrian nature parks celebrating its 10th anniversary in the Austrian Parliament in Vienna on 24 May 2005. Culinary specialities of Austria's nature parks will be offered in this festive event, as well as a presentation on the first illustrated book on Austria's nature parks. Speakers at the decennial are Andreas Khol (President of the National Council), Wolfgang Mair (President of the Association of Austrian Nature Parks), Herbert Günther (President of the Association of German Nature Parks), Michael Starrett (President of EUROPARC Federation), Reinhard Mang (Head of Department of sustainability and rural areas).

Danube Floodplain NP

 

The European Day of Parks is an ideal occasion to explore the danube floodplain. A quiz held in Orth/Donau and in Hainburg gives you the opportunity to find out more about the flood plain's animals and plants, which live in a dynamic habitat. "The Blaník Protected Landscape Area and Natura 2000": This public event takes you along the river "Blanice", which runs through the Blaník PLA's Natura 2000 site. The tour is guided by a botanist of the Blaník PLA.

The Environmental Centre Eichstätt organises a creative workshop on the elder at the Eichstätt information centre from 9 - 11.30 a.m.

The Environmental Centre in Treuchtlingen holds the workshop Waldgeheimnisse (mysteries of the forests), which will lead you through the woods and draw your attention to the forest's treasures and dwellers from 9.30 a.m. until 12.30 p.m.

Drömling NaP

 

On the European Day of Parks, the Drömling Nature Park Administration in Oebisfelde inaugurates a new room that will be used for lectures and experiments. The park administration will also establish a herbal garden to give young people the opportunity to hold project activities. Regional products of the Drömling region will also be offered.

Eifel NP

 

The Eifel National Park begins with its celebration at 10 a.m. The Mayor of Simmerath, Hubert Breuer, opens the event. The authors Jaques Berndorf, Carola Clasen and Ralf Kramp, who write criminal novels set in the Eifel region, sign their books. Comedian Kalle Pohl presents his personal view on the national park. The offer also includes a birds of prey show, various institutions' exhibitions, activites for children, e.g. a magician and a wilderness camp. From midday (12 o'clock) visitors can participate in guided ranger tours and boat trips. The day closes with a service and a gospel concert.

Opening of a discovery trail in co-operation with the German broadcasting company ZDF in Drei Annen Hohne in the Harz National Park.

Kyffhäuser NaP

 

Guided trekking tour on the geological/botanical trail including a picnic. Freshly baked bread and other regional products will be offered on the way. The tour starts at 4 p.m. at the city park in Bad Frankenhausen.

A whole week of trekking will be organised in the Nossentin/Schwinz Heath Nature Park from 30 May until 3 June to celebrate the European Day of Parks. A new tour will be walked each day. Please note that registration is required.

Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft NP

 

Since seven years, the Borner Markt takes place to mark the European Day of Parks. This market aims at presenting the national park region by bringing together local producers, traders, as well as environmental institutions and organisations. This year's motto is '15. Anniversary Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park' and specialises, among others, on national parks in Europe.

Ente Parchi Astigiani - Rocchetta Tanaro NaP

 

The Sea of Genoa and the ancient  Pliocenic Sea: The Parco naturale di Rocchetta Tanaro of Ente Parchi Astigiani and the Primary School of Genoa, Turin, Asti, will offer pupils the opportunity to study and experience the fossile remains of the ancient Pliocenic Sea of "Bacini Terziario Piemontese" on site. Activities include environmental education projects, games in the nature, testing of agricultural products. The event will also look into the site Stagni di Balangero, which is proposed as Natura 2000 site. You are advised to take the train as cars and buses will not be running!

San Floriano NaP/Provincia di Pordenone

 

The 'Parco Naturalistico die San Floriano' and the Province of Pordenone celebrate several events from 1 - 27 May under the umbrella of the European Day of Parks . The programme includes an excursion to the 'Busa Bernard', theatrical readings for children, a presentation of the book 'From the Park of St. Floriano in Polcenigo to Rome', a conference on the safeguard of small amphibians, horse trekking, a market on the Piazza di Polcenigo selling products of the park and an exhibition of the public library of Polcenigo presenting books on environmental issues on 22 May. On 24 May, the province's schools will attend outdoor classes in different rural areas of the park. Please have a look at the programme in English or Italian.

Jostedalsbreen NP

 

On 19 May at 8 p.m. the Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre in Stryn offers a slide show on US national parks by Anna Leena Haapasaari. On 20 May at 8 p.m. Inger Gjaerevoll shows slides of wild flowers growing in South Africa. A botanical walk led by two botanics and an ornitologist is organised on 21 May at 11 a.m. in the Flostranda Nature Reserve.

Protected areas in Podlaskie Province:  Wigry NP, Bialowieza NP, Biebrzanski NP, Narwianski NP, Suwalski Landscape Park, Lomzynski Landscape Park of Narew Valley, Knyszynska Primeval Forest Landscape Park

 

Podlaskie Province celebrates its sixth edition of  the European Day of Parks with a bicycle rally. Young people from over 55 schools (mainly primary and secondary schools) cycle through protected areas of the Podlaskie Province. Each year, more than 1100 people participate in this event since it was first held in 2000. The rally takes place in all parks in the Podlaskie Province. Each protected area is responsible for the organisation of one rally on one day between 30 May and 4 June. All rallys end up in an open meeting with park employees and local communities where lectures, slide shows, film screenings, and exhibitions may be attended.  In each meeting children can test their knowledge in nature protection in competitions. The winners from all the competitions organised in the Podlaskie Province will be invited to take part in the final knowledge competition, guided walks, excursions and concerts.

The Bucegi Nature Park Administration organises a seminar on the identification of possible Natura 2000 sites and on habitats that need a high level of protection. The first part of the seminar consists of a field trip taking place between 10 and 15 May, the second part of the seminar is held as a round table discussion on 24 May 2005.

Cheile Bicazului-Hasmas NP

 

The Bicaz Gorges-Hasmas National Park Administration is invited to  present the park in two expositions on 25 May, which are organised by the Museum of Natural Sciences in Bucharest and the Museum Complex of Natural Sciences in Galai. Photos illustrate the park's biodiversity, landscapes, as well as the park administration's activities.

On 26 May, the national park administration organises a presentation for pupils from local highschools on the theme "What is Natura 2000?” to illustrate the existence of fragile and rare ecosystems close to their homes.

Cozia NP

 

NGOs, institutions, local administrations, pupils and students participate in a tour starting at Calimanesti. The trip ends in Stanisoara, a beautiful place in the mountains of the Cozia National Park, where an outdoor symposium takes place dealing with subjects related to the European Day of Parks and Natura 2000.

This year's European Day of Parks looks into the theme "Designation of forests with Pinus Nigra banatica as site of community importance in accordance with NATURA 2000 objectives". The Gradistea Muncelului-Cioclovina Nature Park Administration organises a meeting for park communities to raise awareness for protected area issues. The meeting provides information for local communities on the Natura 2000 network, the importance of the region's and also Romania's natural protected areas. The event also aims at facilitating communication between the park's local population and the park administration.

Macin Mountains NP

 

"Traditions and Conservation of Biodiversity in the Macin Mountains": The Macin Mountains National Park Administration dedicates this day to its local communities and their activities. The event starts with a presentation in the park explaining the functions of a protected area, the Natura 2000 network and the importance of good collaboration with local communities. The event continues with a competition on floral species, ballads, poems and stories from the park area. Pupils from villages around the park participate in the event.

Mures Floodplain NaP

  Theme of the two day event is 'Proposing new sites for the Natura 2000 network in the county of Arad'. Activities include a discussion meeting, two site visits, GPS-GIS demonstrations for students from Arad city, a picture exhibition and a film presentation. The event is followed by a study tour within Arad county. For three days, participants visit two protected area sites. All activities were advertised in the local media (television, radio and newspapers).

The Rodna Mountains National Park celebrates the establishment of 'Darwin Clubs' in six local schools with the aim of offering activities for young people as part of the project "Youth participation in protected area management in the Rodna Mountains".

Retezat NP

 

The Retezat National Park Administration would like to show young people how their ancestors lived. The project "We and our ancestors" consists of two parts. Firstly, pupils living in villages around the park collect old photos with the aim of exhibiting them in the Ostrovel Visitor Centre to provide an insight into their grandparents' lives. Secondly, children gather old stories from their grandparents and prepare reports. The RNPA awards the best contribution presented at the 'stories evening' in the Ostrovel Visitor Centre bringing together both the older and the younger generation.

Semenic-Cheile Carasului NP

 

On 13 May, a meeting in the local administration of Carasului-Severin is held to discuss the role and importance of protected areas in the county of Carasului-Severin. The May edition of the magazine "Banatul Montan" presents the national park. On 24 May, the park administration provides information materials for local schools explaining the role and the importance of the park for nature conservation. Other activities on the European Day of Parks are reported on in the media.

The Semenic-Cheile Carasului National Park is also represented in a photo exhibition organised by the National Forest Administration in the Nature History Museum of Bucharest on 25 May.

The Fruska Gora National Park organises a photo exhibition on dragonflies. Contributions to the exhibition are welcome! The call for entries is open to all amateur and professional photographers. The exhibition will tour to all major cities in the country. Lectures and seminars with the intention of promoting the importance of protecting these species are also offered.

Arboretum Volcji Potok

 

The Arboretum Volcji Potok organises a poster exhibition on different Slovene trees and shrubs illustrating what they were used for in the past and the present as well as their meaning in mythology and people's believes. Visitors meet at 5 p.m. at the entrance gate of the Arboretum for a guided tour through the park to learn about its trees and shrubs.

Since 1999, the Triglav National Park organises an event to commemorate Albin Belar, the first one who had the idea of founding a park in 1908. For two days the 'Belar Day' gives primary school children the opportunity to participate in activities organised in the Trenta Valley and learn about their natural and cultural heritage.

Visitors to Ängsö may join guided tours led by Park Superintendent Björn Sjöholm and experience the island‘s beautiful nature. Regular boat tours from Strömkajen in central Stockholm are also arranged.

Färnebofjärden NP

 

Short guided tours start from Sevedskvarn at 10  a.m. and 12 noon. During these tours, the Gävleborg County Administration Board provides information on the nature centre, which will be inaugurated on 13 June 2005.

Fulufjället NP

 

The Fulufjället Nature Centre inaugurates a photo exhibition on the Siberian jay and organises lectures and a quiz along the hiking trail to the Njupeskär Falls. Film maker Bo Floren gives a lecture on his film "The Bear" and Prof. Jan Ekman form Uppsala University provides insight into the family life of Siberian jays. Guided tours include activities such as radio-tracking of bears with expert Yngve Hedlund and observing Siberian jay families on an outing with Jan Ekman.

Hamra NP

  Two or three guided tours provide the opportunity to learn more about the valuable natural features of the old forest. A new borchure on the national park, available in three languages, is also distributed.

Norra Kvill NP

 

The Norra Kvill National Park offers an event including activities on an inventory of key habitats. It is arranged by Park Superintendent Torsten Ungsäte and the Kalmar County Forestry Board.

Skuleskogen NP

 

The county administrative board celebrates the occasion by arranging park-related activities for the public free of charge. The Skule Nature Centre, which is located at the foot of Mt. Skuleberget, is open from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. on 21 May; an exhibition informs on the High Coast region and the national park's valuable natural features.

The following guided tours are on offer:
1. Tour through the national park via Slåttdalsskrevan Gorge, departing from the Nature Centre 10 a.m. The tour takes about eight hours and is led by Lennart Westberg. Bring food and drinks, as well as shoes and clothes suitable for a one day hike through the park. Meeting point: Skule Nature Centre before 10 a.m.
2. Hiking tour to the top of Mt. Skuleberget, guided by Eva Sjöström. Duration: three to four hours. Meeting point: Skule Nature Centre before 11 a.m.
 
At Kälaviken Bay, you get the opportunity to meet Karl-Bertil Bergstöm, whose duties include maintaining the parks trails and facilities. Traditional roasted buns are available.

Stenshuvud NP

 

Activities at the Stenshuvud National Park in the Österlen district start at 6:00 a.m. with a daybreak ramble and birding expedition led by a knowledgeable guide. A guided excursion on flowers into the park starts at 9:00 a.m. The nature centre is open from 11 a.m.– 6 p.m. Among the exhibits is a video montage featuring Sweden‘s national parks.

Store Mosse NP

 

A new trail for those with limited mobility is being inaugurated by County Govenor Lars Engkvist. Local craftspeople present their skills, a quiz on nature is organised, and the park's nature centre is open to the public.

Tyresta NP

 

The National Park House offers free tours starting on the hour, every hour.

A special guided tour with emphasis on archaeology through an area of the park that was damaged by a fire in 1999  is also organised from 1:00–3:00 p.m (fee: 50 kronor). In this area, archaeologist Mattias Pettersson made many interesting discoveries dating from the Stone Age. Many of them are fragments of white quartz indicating where Stone Age hunters set up a camp some 9000 years ago. Meeting point: Stensjödal parking area before 1:00 p.m.

Forest of Bowland AONB

 

A conference   on sustainable tourism in the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for partners and tourism enterprises takes place on 24 May. The Forest of Bowland AONB celebrates following the completion of the Sustainable Tourism Strategy. The conference aims to officially launch both the strategy and the new website. An active afternoon programme of drop in sessions introduces local Bowland produce and includes a demonstration of the new Forest of Bowland AONB website.

Lake District NP

 

The Lake District National Park Centre was one of the first centres to receive a major award for being an eco-centre. The centre raises awareness of people's impacts on the environment, and provides opportunities, knowledge, skills and facilities to reduce these. You are welcome to take part at a  leisurely stroll through the grounds of Brockhole highlighting the story of the house and why the site was chosen as the first National Park Centre. This is a voluntary ranger led walk of approximately 1.5 kms. The event is free and suitable for those with limited mobility. Beginning: 11 a.m. at the Brockhole Visitor Centre in Windermere, Cumbria.

In the afternoon, participants meet at the Lake District Visitor Centre in Brockhole, Windermere, for a relaxing walk up over an old pack horse trail to a unique 17th century lakeland village.
