Thayatal NP

 

On the occasion of this year's European Day of Parks, the Thayatal National Park will inaugurate a new thematic nature trail, "Hennerweg", close to the national park visitor centre. During the two hour opening the educational and practical conception of the trail will be presented to participants.

Großes Walsertal BP

 

On the theme of "Explore the forests of the Großes Walsertal" the park's administration invites families to an expedition through the woods of the area. Accompanied by a ranger, visitors will get to know the significance of trees and will learn more about the processes going on inside them.

Consortium Nature Parks of the Burgenland

 

The association "Burgenland Tourismus" organised a nature film festival entitled "Pannatura" in the Neusiedler See - Seewinkel National Park and held an international symposium on making natural resources accessible to today's and coming generations. In addition, the Association of Austrian Nature Parks presented an exhibition, and the nature parks of the Burgenland arranged a special family day with a rallye, environmental education activities and a raffle.

  On an excursion guided by a botanist and a zoologist of the protected area adminstration, participants got to know the beautiful landscape of the national nature reserve "Vysenske kopce" close to the town of Český Krumlov and learned more about its essential aspects including flora, fauna, management, nature conservation and legislation.

  The Podyji National Park offered a botanical walk on which participants learned more about the ecology and protection of selected plants and their habitats. In addition, a competition for children and adults was held and the children choir from Jevisovice gave a concert in a traditionally restored chapel in the region.

Kellerwald-Edersee NP

  The park administration invited the public to a national park festival. Visitors had numerous possibilities to actively get to know the park and the region. They could for example attend a park rallye, several action games and environmental education activities. In addition, local farmers presented their homemade products on a market.

  To celebrate the European Day of Parks the reserve's Junior Ranger group held an event together with the reserve's ranger team. Furthermore the reserve's administration organised an information event for the public in cooperation with the Rhön Park Hotel.

Danube Ipoly NP

  The Danube Ipoly National Park dedicated this year's Europaen Day of Parks to children. On the theme of "Nature protection and cultural values for children", the park organised a competition, a concert and an exhibition of local handicrafts with sale and training possibilities. Furthermore, the management of the Natura 2000 site "Szenas Hills" was presented.

The San Floriano Nature Park held outdoor lessons in cooperation with local schools in different rural areas of the park in order to give pupils the chance to learn more about the park's nature in practice.

The Prealpi Giulie NaP will hold a park festival on the occasion of the 2006 European Day of Parks in which the fourth meeting of protected areas of the eastern alps will take place on the theme of "Parks - their legends and popular traditions". The programme will comprise presentations of the participating parks, including exhibition stands presenting local products and information material, street shows and parades of folk dance groups.

Žemaitija NP

  The park's administration will organise an awareness raising campaign on the theme "Landscape of the Žemaitija National Park: Space for Nature, Opportunities for People". As part of the campaign several articles explaining management issues of the park will be published in a local newspaper. In addition, park staff and local people will clean the area around Mikytai Castle Hill and will restore cultural monuments.

  A lecture entitled 'The Little Ice Age' will inform about the development of glaciers and the damages they caused to pasture land and farms in western Norway in the 17th and 18th century. Nigardsbreen and Brenndalsbreen, two outlet glaciers from Jostedlasbreen glacier, will take centre stage of the speech.

Retezat NP

 

The Retezat National Park Administration will organise an event entitled "Together we help the Retezat National Park" in cooperation with the Hunedoara county school, the Salvamont Rescue Team and the Mountain Guard. Part of the event is a demonstration on climbing and first-aid measures in the park's visitor centre. In addition, there will be a final competition between school teams on a knowledge contest about "Do's and Don'ts in the national park that started in February 2006.

The Environmental Protection Agency held an event to raise awareness for the need to protect the endemic pinus species Pinus nigra ssp. banatica which occurs in a significant number in the Domogled Valea-Cernei National Park.

Danube Delta BR

 

In order to highlight the importance of the European Day of Parks and to raise public awareness on the necessity to preserve and sustainable use biological diversity, the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve organised a flora and fauna parade. Children wore costumes and presented posters on plants and animals describing their characteristics, protection status and conservation needs. In local schools information material on the event and biodiversity in the biosphere reserve was distributed and an essay contest entitled "Let's protect biodiversity in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve" was carried out. The winner schools were presented on 5 June - the Environment Day - and received teaching aids for their environmental education class.

EcoCentre Zapovedniks

  The Moscow based environmental NGO EcoCentre Zapovedniks carried out a festival on the theme of "Moscow Parks gather their friends" aiming at drawing Moscovites' attention to the "Green Islands" of the capital and motivating people to participate in the competition "Give life to Protected Areas". About 500 children from 50 schools and youth organisations as well as representatives of the government in Moscow, protected area staff, teachers and leaders of the Club "Friends of Protected Areas" attended the event.

EcoCentre Zapovedniks

  The Smolenskoe Poozerje National Park held the 8th Festival of Protected Area Art Songs aiming at raising awareness on the value of protected areas and drawing the public attention to art songs. In addition, the organisers were looking for young and talented authors.

Tara NP

  The Tara National Park dedicated this year's European Day of Parks to children. On a guided hiking tour children from the region explored a new nature trail near Monastery Raca, the most important historical and cultural site in the park. In addition, an art exhibition with exhibits made by children from local primary schools about the natural and cultural values of the Tara National Park was held and junior ranger activities were presented.

Triglav NP

 

Since 1999, the Triglav National Park has organised the 'Belar Day' in the Trenta valley to commemorate Albin Belar, the person who first had the idea of founding the Triglav National Park in 1908. To be held on 23 May this year, the event provides primary school children from Slovenia and abroad the opportunity to  learn about the natural and cultural values of the Triglav National Park and the Trenta valley. Planned activities include a walk on the Soca trail and a visit of the park's visitor centre.

In 2006, the Triglav National Park celebrates its 25th anniversary in its current dimension of nearly 84.000 ha covering 4 % of the Slovenian territory.  On the occasion of the anniversary a conference will be organised with speakers remembering the pioneers of nature conservation in Slovenia.

EUROPARC Spain

  Since 2001 EUROPARC Spain together with the Fundación de las Cajas de Ahorros (FUNCAS) have announced prizes for sustainable land use projects which further the development and conservation of Spanish protected areas. The first prize was awarded to the Asociación Territorios Vivos for a project aiming at supporting the Natura 2000 sites of Sierra del Rincón through an improved environmental policy.

  Visitors experienced a variegated park festival with lectures, a bear and bird excursion, open-air walks combined with a quiz competition and the delicious National Park Cake. The lectures focused on the flora on the Norwegian side of the Fulufjallet mountain, the history and development of the cultural landscape shaped by the mountain farmers and mountain cows.

  A variegated programme was waiting for visitors on this special day including a guided tour on the sounds of spring, a barbecue at which one could learn how to make fire with flint and tinder, an exploration of animals and plants living in the water and a slide show on Sweden's national parks.

  The Store Mosse National Park celebrates the European Day of Parks traditionally on 6 June, Sweden's National Day. This year an open day in the visitor centre was carried out with an exhibition of local artists who displayed works on the theme of nature; the children's loop trail was reopened after being renovated and a barbecue with music and a nature knowledge contest took place.
