European Day of Parks 2007

 


 


The European Day of Parks takes place in many European countries.

In 2007, at least 421 events were organised by protected areas, government authorities and non-governmental organisations in 20 European countries to mark the occasion on and around 24 May.

2007 European Day of Parks

Thayatal NP

 

On the occasion of this year's European Day of Parks, the Thayatal National Park organises a game festival in co-operation with the bordering Podyji National Park in the Czech Republic. Children get to know old and new games and thereby mingle with chidren from the neighboring country. The event takes place on the banks of the river Thaya and if things work out well it will even be possible to traverse the river by boot.

Deux Ourthes NaP

  On the theme of "Wallonia's nature parks at the heart of nature and sustainable development" the park organises a technical workshop with presentations of nature parks from Wallonia and the neighbouring countries Germany, France and Luxembourg. Participants are invited to taste local delicacies from each park.

Central Balkan NP

  The national park invites the public to a trip to Gradishte during which the ecological services and long-term benefits provided by the park are presented. In addition, participants have the opportunity to attend a survival training in the wilderness including setting up tents and first aid measures.

Pod Javori Forest Park

  The park inaugurated a new nature trail on the Island of Losinj with panels on the park's flora, fauna and history.

Cikat Forest Park

  The park published and distributed a leaflet about the naturalist Ambroz Haracic who promoted the Island of Losinj as a climatological health resort. In addition, a panel informing about his life and merit was installed. Special enclosures for insects made by children were put up and a lecture on their purpose and function was given.

  The non-profit cultural association "Project Ultra Split" organised a promotion event for the park including a guided walk with a photo-safari, an exhibition on land art and an open-air flute concert.

2007 European Day of Parks

České Švýcarsko o.p.s.

  České Švýcarsko o.p.s. is a public benefit corporation promoting sustainable tourism in the Czech Switzerland. The organisation carries out a seminar on environmental friendly tourism, guided trips, an exposition, a film presentation and an open-air concert of Vladimir Vaclavek and Sestry Steinovy.

25 - 26 May

Krkonoše NP

  The national park administration celebrated the Earth Day mainly focusing on children and young people. Invitations were sent to local schools and finally 500 children from 12 schools participated. Along a nature trail with 10 different stations they explored typical spring plants, aspects of the hedgehog's life, bird's nesting sites, the term Natura 2000 and the latest windthrow in the park. At some stations the children attended games like guessing bird's names in different European languages or accomplished practical tasks like preparing hand-made goat butter. In addition local handicraft was exhibited and parts of the park's management were explained.

Podyjí NP

  The park administration held an open-day in a renascent chapel with a choir concert. In addition, a botanical excursion from Znojmo to Popice and back was organised, which focused on the vegetation of the steppes and heaths as well as the management of the non-forested areas.

  In co-operation with the bordering Thayatal National Park, Austria, the Podyji National Park organised a game and sport festival for families with their children from both sides of the river Dyje.

Železné hory PLA

  On a cycling tour several Natura 2000 sites within the PLA and an exposition on the theme were presented to the public. In addition, a hiking tour to promote the nature trail Údoli Doubravy was offered.

  The administration promoted the protected area amongst children by organising an information stand with nature products, competitions, games and a promotion film.

  People were invited to participate in an excursion in the longest cave of the Beskydy.

  The Beskydy PLA administration in co-operation with the company ITS Beskydy s.r.o. and some villages carried out a big cleaning up action along the most frequent used footpath of the Beskydy.

  The public could participate in a competition. People had to solve an enigma about the nature trail Lysá hora by sending a card with the correct answer to the park administration. The winners received interesting magazines about the nature and landscape of the Beskydy.

Český raj PLA

  The park administration opened the information centre and an exposition on the theme of "Ancient trees of Český raj". Traditionally, staff members of the administration, people from the surrounding villages, representatives from NGOs and other supporters of nature protection participated in the event. In addition, excursions on birdlife and flora through the Podtrosecká údoli Nature Reserve were offered.

Český kras PLA and Karlštejn NNR

  The public was invited to a day-long cognitive walking tour through the Karlštejn Nature Reserve. On the tour natural and cultural features of the area were highlighted including geology, historical sites and problems linked with the protection of the whole PLA.

Krivoklátsko PLA

  A bunch of events marked the European Day of Parks in the Krivoklátsko PLA: an excursion in the Stará ves Nature Reserve, an excursion to the Celtic oppodium in stradonice and a visit in the information centre of Celtic culture in Nižbor, eco-games for children and a photo exhibition on the theme of "Krivoklátsko vicious dreams".

  An exhibition on smelting in a replica of the Great Moravian kiln was organised along with a photo exhibition on the nature of the PLA and an open day in a cave, which is usually not open to the public.

  The Jeseníky PLA organised an open day in the park administration with lectures, movie presentations and an educational programme for schools and the public.

Poodří PLA

  Hiking and bike tours were offered to the village of Bartošovice where a traditional fair, a castle and the PLA's information centre could be visited. In addition, a nature trail could be explored and fruit distilled-beverages from the region could be tasted and the best ones were awarded a price.

  During a guided cycling excursion participants learned about ancient trees and fabulous places in the protected area. Moreover a new information brochure was presented.

  The first series of planned excursions to a former military training area with limestone habitats close to Český Krumlov was started and the importance, protection and promotion of the area was highlighted.

Labské pískovce PLA

  The PLA's administration organised a colourful event at the view point Belvedér comprising competitions, a theatre performance, an exhibition of old maps about the PLA, demonstrations of outdoor activities, scientific activities for children, an eco-market, a workshop on handmade goods a lecture about the history of tourism in the area, a movie projection, a concert, guided hiking tours and a tour by carriage.

  The public was invited to a guided walking tour through the forests and swamps of the area and was informed about the PLA's management.

  A day-long guided excursion along both sides of the Czech / Polish border on the theme of "History and present time of nature and landscape at the state border" was offered to the public.

  Two lectures on the themes of "The history of railway and tunnel construction" and "The ecological track - a problem related to all of us" were given in the information centre and the environmental education centre of the park. In addition, a walk with games exploring the park was offered.

Maribosřerne NaP

  The first regional meeting on establishing and developing nature parks was held in Denmark. Representatives from 20 organisations participated in the event and discussed thoughts and ideas on how to promote nature parks as a tool for protection of Natura 2000 sites and how to create better possibilities for tourism.

Pallas-Yllästunturi NP / Metsähallitus

  The park offered a one-day training course in nature photography with a digital camera facilitated by the professional photographer Katri Laaksonen. Further on a geological exhibition on the theme of "From the stone-axe to the mobile phone - geology at our use" was opened for school children.

Pallas-Yllästunturi NP

  Pupils from the local school were invited to a photo safari along the Varkaankuru nature trail and had the task to take pictures from their favorite places along the trail. The best shots were exhibited afterwards in the Kellokas visitor centre.

  Events organised included film presentations about nature conservation in Finland in the 1950s and 1960s in a historical cinema, guided walks on the themes of birds and forests for children and adults and the presentation of traditional skills in the Kovero Tenant Farm.

Oulanka NP

  In the Oulanka Visitor Centre a slide show on birds in Oulanka was held, a bird excursion was offered along the Kiutaköngäs nature trail and people could enjoy a campfire with nice food and drinks. A similar programme was additionally on offer in the Hautajarvi Visitor Centre with s lecture an the history of the national park, a campfire and a hike on a nature trail.

Siida / Northern Lapland Nature Centre / Metsähallitus

  The festive day started with a short guided walk through the Koilliskaira Visitor Centre and was followed by a guided tour on a geological nature trail, which rises through spruce forest up to the Pikku-Tankavaara hill. Coffee was served by an open fire in a wooden Lapp pole tent on the grounds of the visitor centre.

Hiidenportti NP / Metsähallitus

  The 25th anniversary of the national park was celebrated on the occasion of the European Day of Parks. The celebraties began with presentations at the Hiiden Torppa tourism base and highlighted the themes "How did Hiidenportti become a NP, the park today and the park from the point of view of a nature tourism entrepreneur. The presentation's focus was on the cultural heritage of the park presented on the basis of an inventory and studies accomplished in 2006. The event was topped off with a guided excursion to the heart of the park - the Hiidenportti Gorge.

Tilos Park Association

  On the theme of "The new Tilos Natural Park" the Tilos Park Association (TPA), a non-profit association, will host an audio-visual seminar for island residents, students and visitors to present the terrestrial and marine island wildlife of this Natura 2000 site. The TBA works currently with the Hellenic Ministry of the Environment on the legal establishment of the Tilos Natural Park and nature protection zones for this registered Special Protection Area.

San Floriano NaP

 


Europe yesterday, today and tomorrow
is the title of a conference, which is being organised by the Regional Agency for Rural Development at the municipal theatre in Polcenigo. Focusing on the history of the European Union since its foundation in 1957 one of the key speakers Domenico Lenanduzzi, former Director of the Directorate- General for Education and Culture of the European Commission will talk about the future perspectives of the EU education programmes Erasmus and Socrates.

As part of the conference Patrizia Rossi, Director of the Alpi Marittime Nature Park and former President of the EUROPARC Federation will give a presentation on protected areas in Europe and on what has been done by EUROPARC to support nature conservation in Europe and to rise people's awareness about nature protection, in particular of young generations.

The Regional Agency for Rural Development will offer a seminar about honey production and how one can recognise honey quality by examining its colour, density and taste. As part of the seminar local primary school children will be taught about the different phases of honey extraction.

Sila NP

 

The LAG Valle del Crocchio is a non profit association comprising different regional partners: the local bank, representatives from other associations e.g. farmers, breeders, craftsmen and the local population. They support the economic and cultural development of the rural region including the Sila National Park. On the occasion of the European Day of Parks the LAG Valle del Crocchio will organise several tours to present and promote the Sila National Park: an educational tour for students from Monaco Centre to the village of Mancuso and to Taverna; a tour for adults through the Gariglione Nature Reserve; a tour to the Biogenetic Poverella Reserve; another one to the Biodiversity Chestnut Garden in Vecchiarello, Sersale; a birdwatching tour to the Lake Passante in Taverna and a tour through the Monaco Centre and the Natural Museum in the Old Sila Village. In addition a conference on the theme of "Nature sites in synergy with LIFE projects" will take place on 26 May.

2007 European Day of Parks

Kursiu nerija NP

  A big opening ceremony of a new nature trail called "nature puzzle" marked the European Day of Parks in the Kursiu nerija National Park. Primary school children completed the trail exemplary and were watched by teachers, future educators and representatives of the community. The path enables to explore nature through puzzles, games and special visual and sensual methods. After the lesson, a discussion about possibilities and perspectives of environmental education and the collaboration between all institutions involved in the preparation of educational programmes for children took place. In addition, employees of the park administration presented the park's educational programme for children.

  This year all 20 national parks in the Netherlands celebrate the year of biodiversity and organise various events on the theme. After the kickoff in June 2007 activities will be held until May 2008.

Zapovedniks EcoCentre

  The 7th traditional ecological city festival "Moscow Parks gather friends" marked the European Day of Parks. More than 600 pupils representing 43 groups of Moscow Parks' Friends with their teachers participated in it. Each group had created its own posters, flags and slogans that called for paying attention to the problems of Moscow parks, joining the Friends of Nature Reserved Islands Movement and preserving the nature of Moscow. The festival comprised a colourful bunch of activities: games, information stands about Moscow Parks, a drawing competition, origami and theatre performances.

Tatra NP

  The Slovak and Italian electricity company ENEL will finance a project aiming at preserving the Tatra chamois and marmot in the national park and improving the energy efficiency of the park's infrastructure. On 24 May the project and the environmental strategy of ENEL were presented followed by an excursion to a hydroelectric power station.
