Nature and Wilderness at our doorstep: challenges and best practice examples to preserve biodiversity
Conservation and the protection of wilderness are facing serious challenges indeed: In the wider surroundings of Regensburg a wide range of ecosystems is found particularly with regards to the rivers Naab, Regen and Danube coming together here. This region hosts a diversity of protected areas, which aim at preserving an extraordinary biodiversity.
Dr. Christian Stierstorfer, head of the LBV office Oberpfalz is going to explain what the main goals of his nature protection agency are and how respective projects fit into a wider conservation context. In addition, Dr. Stierstorfer will present successes as well as challenges for nature conservation work in and around Regensburg.
Protecting nature is the aim of nature parks, too. At Naturpark Altmühltal, a protected area near Regensburg one is looking at a human made landscape where fauna and flora are maintained by human interaction. The Visitor Centre Naturpark Altmühltal manages those activities. Head Christoph Würflein is well aware of the challenges of current protecting efforts and shares his experiences from the nature park versus national parks where wilderness without any human interaction are followed.
The photo exhibition „Living Parks“ of EUROPARC Federation presents the frame for a presentations series of renowned conservation experts. The exhibition is on display until June 3, 2012 at the Museum of Natural Science Eastern Bavaria, in Regensburg.
