Walking on the Kitaibel Pál nature trail - Séta a Kitaibel Pál tanösvényen
A solitary giant rising like an island from the flat land of the Marcal Basin, Somló preserves numerous natural values to this day: the special basalt forms are home to rare plant and animal species. The cultural and historical values of our country include the once flourishing Bronze Age settlement on the mountaintop and the viticulture at the foot of the mountain, which also dates back thousands of years and produces famous wines. The sights of this uniquely beautiful Somló Landscape Protection Area, founded in 1993, are presented by the 3 km long, 9-station nature trail named after botanist Pál Kitaibel (1757-1817).
The trail is easily accessible from the access road leading to Somló, which branches off from road number eight. The first stop of the trail is located on the side of the mountain, at the Margaret Chapel.
Here are some data to give you an idea of the difference in altitude: the starting and ending points are 290 m, the Somló Castle is 367 m, the starting point of the return branch of the educational trail is 310 m, the Lookout is located at an altitude of 431 m above sea level.
