European Day of Natural and National Parks in Romania (Europe)
European Day of Nature and National Parks is celebrated annually on 24 May and marks an important moment for raising awareness of the importance of protected areas in Europe.
Origin of the Day
This day was established in 1999 by the EUROPARC Federation, a European organization dedicated to the conservation and sustainable management of protected areas. The date of 24 May was chosen because, on this day, in 1909, the first nine national parks in Europe were established in Sweden.
Purpose of the Day
European Day of Parks aims to:
Raise awareness of the role of national and nature parks in protecting biodiversity.
Promote sustainable tourism and educational activities in nature.
Encourage the involvement of local communities in protecting the environment.
Annual theme
Each year, EUROPARC chooses a different theme to highlight an important aspect of nature conservation. For example, a recent theme was “Building on our roots”, emphasizing the connection between natural and cultural heritage.
Examples of activities
On European Parks Day, many countries organize:
Guided hikes
Educational workshops for children
Thematic presentations on nature conservation
