European Day of Parks

The European Day of Parks was launched by the EUROPARC Federation with the aim of raising the profile of Europe's protected areas and generating public support for their aims and work. It was first held in 1999 and a broad variety of events in and about protected areas highlighting the need to protect these have been organised. Events have been celebrated across Europe on an annual basis on and around 24 May, a date that has been chosen to commemorate the creation of Europe's first nine national parks in Sweden on 24 May 1909.
2010: Biodiversity and People: Space for Nature?
We are pleased to announce that the theme for the European Day of Parks (EDoP) 2010 will be connected to the officially declared International Year of Biodiversity 2010. We have chosen the following title:
Biodiversity and People: Space for Nature?; Biodiversität und Mensch: Ist da noch Raum für Natur?; La biodiversite et l'homme: quel espace pour la nature?
As usual the events for the EDoP will be organised on and around the 24th of May in 2010, which we commemorate as it was the day the first National Park was founded in Sweden in 1909. We hope that many of our members will organize events around this theme, which raises many questions such as:
Can biodiversity and people live together? What are the challenges here and what needs to be changed? How can we ensure that this is possible? What would a utopia look like where the balance between people and nature was perfect? Are there any practical examples which bring biodiversity and people together? How can we bring people closer to biodiversity and nature? How can we communicate the importance of biodiversity to different target groups?
The international day of biodiversity takes place on the 22nd of May this year so why not organise events that celebrate both occasions?!
Please let us know what you are planning and we will record the event in our EDoP calendar. The recording of these events this year is even more important as the EUROPARC Federation will be making even more of an effort to promote the EDoP. The more events we get together the more effective the promotion of our protected areas across the continent.
More information will be available here soon.
