Why do we need Urban Greening Plans?
Urbanisation is a driver of biodiversity loss, and climate change. At the same time, urban areas are also heavily affected by heatwaves, flooding and other extreme weather phenomena related to our changing climate.
That is why the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 calls upon cities with over 20.000 inhabitants to create Urban Greening Plans (UGPs). These UGPs function as “integrated frameworks” to help create a process for municipalities and citizens to bring nature (back) into cities.
Urban Greening Plans are the way to healthy, green and liveable cities, now and in the future.
To help support this process, and give practical examples of how European Periurban Parks are already making cities greener, EUROPARC is part of the LIFE UrbanGreeningPlans project. You can read more about the project here.
Over the upcoming months, this page will be transformed into a special Knowledge Hub with case studies, interviews and practical example of Urban Greening. It is created within the LIFE UrbanGreeningPlans project and will link to the official European Platform for Urban Greening. Watch this space!
