Summary

To increase business involvement and to reduce the difficulties of companies’ management, Parco Nord Milano started a collaboration with Rete Clima, a non profit organisation that acts as an intermediary between the Park and the business companies. Rete Clima leads the companies in paths of sustainability and decarbonization and organises with Parco Nord Milano team building days for companies’ employees inside the Park, with collective plantation initiatives.
Thanks to this collaboration, Parco Nord Milano has increased its self-financial skill and has shared its values about sustainability and biodiversity conservation with many companies.

Background of the project

Parco Nord Milano had only few direct collaborations with companies, because of the difficulties in their management.

The Park wanted to increase collaborations with business companies, to improve its self-financing skill, to share values about sustainability and biodiversity conservation and to promote its spaces and events.
On the other hand, more and more companies were interested in paths of sustainability, with local concrete actions.

Solution and actions taken

Parco Nord Milano started a collaboration with Rete Clima, a non profit organisation that promotes Corporate Social Responsibility activities helping business companies to reduce their carbon footprint and to offset their greenhouse gasses emission through planting trees. In this way, Rete Clima acts as an intermediary between Parco Nord Milano and business companies, fulfilling the needs of both parties.

Since 2013, Rete Clima has organised with Parco Nord Milano team building days for companies’ employees inside the Park, with collective plantation initiatives. At the same time, Parco Nord Milano has planned communication campaigns and press releases.

Results

Thanks to the collaboration with Rete Clima, Parco Nord Milano can involve more companies, offering a supporting team of experts that guides them, not only in single actions like one-day plantation, but also in real sustainability paths. This guarantees a deep and concrete companies involvement (no greenwashing).
Since 2013, ReteClima has planted approximately 25000 trees within Parco Nord Milano on a total area of 10 hectares, involving about 40 companies a year.

Challenges

The main problem in business involvement is mediating between the protected area’s and the company’s needs.

Lessons learned

The collaboration with a non profit organisation specialised in CSR activities improves the business involvement capability of a public institution.
