The European Commission launched a new publication entitled “LIFE and new partnerships for nature“, about how conservation projects succeed by targeting unexpected audiences. One of the examples comes from our European Charter Network : Lands of Priolo, Sao Miguel – Azores, Portugal (page 68).

Lands of Priolo (or Terras do Priolo) aimed at protecting an endemic and highly threatened species: the Azores bullfinch or Priolo. In order to involve all relevant actors for the protection of this species’ habitat, a Sustainable Tourism Strategy was developed,  following the principles of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas. Local authorities, businesses, tour operators, NGOs and representatives from both the tourism industry and nature conservation, participated in the Stakeholders Forum and developed together a 5 years strategy for the territory.

Engaging local stakeholders is one of the 5 principles and main requirements of the Charter. The strategy’s long-term success relies on the shared vision of the territory by its actors, therefore, an effective and inclusive consultation is essential.

One of the main achievements of Lands of Priolo, was the creation of a brand, a quality seal for companies who establish partnerships with São Miguel Natural Park, to promote conservation and sustainable tourism. The “Priolo Brand” encourages the adoption of environmentally-friendly practices, represents the exclusivity of the region and works as a promotion tool for the tour operators . Within the first year, 19 enterprises committed to have environmental-friendly practices and the network is still growing. The Sustainable Tourism Strategy was awarded by the EUROPARC Federation in 2012.

Der/Die Finance Manager/in ist für das Finanz- und Rechnungswesens eines gemeinnützigen Vereins verantwortlich. Hierzu gehören das Erstellen von Bilanzen einschließlich Anhang und Steuererklärungen, sowie die Vertretung des Vereins gegenüber dem Finanzamt. Er/Sie übernimmt eigenständig die finanzielle Abwicklung von nationalen und internationalen Förderprojekten.

Wir suchen in Teilzeit (50%) eine(n) erfahrene(n), in hohem Maße organisierte(n) und findige(n) Mitarbeiter(in), mit einem gesunden Interesse an der Natur und der Bereitschaft, im Umfeld eines gemeinnützigen Vereins zu arbeiten.  Als deutsche(r) Muttersprachler(in) beherrschen Sie außerdem Englisch in Wort und Schrift, da das Tagesgeschäft überwiegend in Englisch abgewickelt wird.

Im Gegenzug bieten wir eine Arbeit, die hochgradig interessant und abwechlungsreich ist. Ihr Tätigkeitsbereich umfasst hauptsächlich die Finanz- und Projektverwaltung. Ihre berufliche Ausbildung oder Werdegang sollte im Bereich der Bilanzbuchhaltung und Verwaltung liegen. Sie gehen sicher mit den MS Office Programmen, insbesondere Excel, und modernen Kommunikationsmedien um. Idealerweise verfügen Sie über praktische Erfahrungen in der Anwendung der Lexware Buchhaltungssoftware.

The European Commission – Environment and Climate Action Directorates-General – published recently two inspiring publications regarding the LIFE Programme: “Best Life Nature Projects 2014” and “Best Life Environment Projects 2014”.

Both publications introduce the “Life Best Awards´” winners and “the best of the best” projects, and are certainly a good reading for those currently running or aiming to apply to LIFE Programme. There you will find good examples of projects from across Europe, with different objectives – from communication and education to habitat restoration.

On February  1st, a new online training for Protected Area Specialists will start in Romania. The platform www.proparktraining.ro, created in 2015, opens now its third edition to 49 participants who are directly or indirectly involved in the management of Protected Areas, and motivated students that want to start working for Protected Areas. 

A flexible schedule, an interactive learning process and, most important, a pertinent content of high relevance for protected area professionals (topics & practice) are the main reasons for attending this training. During 6 weeks of intensive study within the virtual platform, the romanian students will be evaluated, and,  based on the results, the first 15 students will participate in a ”face to face” session, in order to become certified Protected Area Specialists in Romania.

In the meantime, ProPark Foundation for Protected Areas, is analysing the feedback and experience gathered in the previous versions in 2015, improving materials in order to create a dynamic and “fresh” way of learning.

This is a real challenge for all the trainers who are working right now, discussing solutions, exchanging experiences – especially after the training events – , all to improve the content and offer a better experience of learning  on the online platform
